Transient Luminous Events (TLE) – Explanation and photography

What are red sprites?

Red sprites are a type of transient luminous event (TLE) that occurs above intense thunderstorms. They appear as giant electrical discharges, often reddish or orange in colour, above the storm clouds (cumulonimbus).

These phenomena are triggered by powerful positive electrical discharges between the top of the cloud and the ionosphere, at altitudes between 50 and 90 km. Their duration is extremely short, generally just a few milliseconds, which makes them difficult to observe with the naked eye.

Main characteristics of red sprites

Altitude: 50–90 km (mesosphere)

Duration: 1–100 ms

Colour: Red, orange or purple (depending on altitude and atmospheric composition)

Shape: Vertical columns, carrots, angels, jellyfish, etc.

Size: Up to 50 km in height and 100 km in diameter

Red sprites are generally associated with mesoscale convective systems (MCS). Observing them is favoured by conditions of low ambient light (night or twilight) and a clear horizon.

How do red sprites form?

Red sprites mainly form when strong positive electrical discharges (known as CG+, or positive cloud-to-ground lightning) occur between the top of the cloud and the ground. These discharges generate an intense electric field above the storm, which ionises the air and creates a cold plasma discharge propagating upward: the sprite. The ambient electrons are accelerated, collide with local gas molecules and excite them. As these molecules return to their normal state, they emit light.

Key steps:

  1. Positive electrical discharge between the cloud and the ground.
  2. Creation of an intense electric field above the cloud.
  3. Ionisation of the air and formation of conductive filaments (streamers).
  4. Initiation of the discharge at high altitude and propagation of the filaments (sprite).

Recommended equipment:

  • Camera: DSLR or mirrorless in long exposure mode.
  • Base lens: 50mm with a wide aperture (f/1.4 recommended).
  • ISO sensitivity: 1600–6400 in photo mode, > 16000 ISO in video mode.
  • Exposure time: 1–5 seconds (long exposure) or 4K/25fps video to extract frames.
  • Tripod: Essential to avoid blur.
  • Remote shutter release: To avoid vibrations.

Tip: Use automatic detection software (such as UFO Analyzer) to analyse your videos and spot sprites.
